What, you think shed ruin his life because of a joke?

Article image

A good person doesnt ruin somebodys life over some random accusation.

Bearing false witness is the worst crime that you might commit.

Does that seem fair?

Heres one thing worth saying: All those points are well taken … to an extent.

(Weinerhas maintainedthat he does not remember this incident.)

Its also worth saying that Weiner is not the sole author of this episode.

Then its worth talking about the in-story context itself.

But theres a sketchy side to David as well.

He also has boundary issues, hanging around in clients houses when theyre not home.

Davids constant attempts at Wildean wit frequently fall flat, too.

This wasnt a botched come-on or a grooming attempt, it was just a bad stand-up set.

I think I can see the argument the episode is trying to make.

Is that, the show asks, a crime?

Take Katherine, for instance.

Theres nothing wrong with having a wishy-washy protagonist, of course.

(Have you heard about this Hamlet dude?)

Katherines not alone in behaving in ways that make for entertaining scenes but undercut the projects philosophical aims.

But if that had happened to you, wouldnt turns out Allenwasa girl be the wholepointof the anecdote?

Im deeply suspicious of work that paints public-school teachers, especially women, as unyielding martinets.

And theres another problem with Katherine: the casting.

But no, it keeps coming back, with no in-story source and no explanation, either.

Is this a portent of coming doom?

Is it intended to evoke a paranoid atmosphere, calling to mind the unmarked black choppers of conspiracy-theory lore?

But I keep coming back to that helicopter noise.

Sometimes, things are exactly as corny as they sound.
