Reunited with each other and their estranged father for Nells funeral, the siblings squabble among themselves and misbehave.

Steve makes lame jokes, Luke freaks out, Theo gets drunk, and Shirley acts self-righteous.

Thats not to say that there are no ghosts to the contrary.

Sometimes Mommy sees people here too, she tells Nell perhaps the least reassuring thing possible to say.

But theyre not here to hurt us.

So far, weve heard a number of different theories about ghosts.

Hugh tells Nell that the visions she sees are her dreams overflowing their boundaries and spilling into reality.

And in a lineborrowed fromDoctor Who, in episode two Olivia says, Were all stories in the end.

Of course, the siblings once were indivisible, until they werent anymore.

scene, Nell vanishes while Theo believes shes holding tight to her hand.

The family searches the house for her, to no avail.

Finally, when the storm ends and the lights go on, theres Nell, shivering and sobbing.

The camera makes a slow pan around the room; by the time it returns, theyre adults again.

Parents often tend to picture their adult children as younger than they really are.

For Hugh, thats especially true, since hes been disconnected from his children ever since Hill House.

When he sees Nell as a child in the coffin, its almost unspeakably moving.

(Youre the ghost!

Steve yells at his father.

I can see right through you.)

Were not any closer to the truth.

We also saw him in episode two, making the same gesture on her couch.

Jackson wrote similar monthly letters to her parents for her entire adult life.

I was right that hes evil.
