I have set up season 4 very dramatically in fact, but what happens?
Can you keep finding new gross things to happen to you?
You know, whats funny is that we never set out to gross anybody out.
We set out to just make each other laugh in the room.
It was supposed to be all over my clothes, that was what was scripted.
Then she threw it and it spilled, but were like, just throw it at my face.
Its kind of a fun thing to revisit.
A lot of the times I will then be on set and go Lets push this a little further.
Telling the actress, Push my head down, use me to get up.
Youve also got a callback in season 3 to the season 2Hamiltonparody Going Postal about Ben Franklin.
It was a really nice, catchy song.
Listen, I dont want to compare myself to what he did, its a great thing.
We put that together pretty fast, so you draw your own conclusion.
Our incredible composer Rob Kolar takes these lyrics that we give him and turns stuff into this crazy masterpiece.
That was always the germ of this series, which was this couple.
It is the joy of seeing how far we can push them.
They were up to like 60 degrees, and could they take it to 61?
I was so tense watching it.
Thats the metaphor for this show.

She has this natural ability to just be this character.

If something comes across politically charged its because thats who me and my writers are.
I dont spare any target.
But I also wont belabor it.

Youre doing a lot of comedy now but that wasnt always your goal.
I always loved comedy.
I was watching it and laughing hard like Ive never laughed before.
Because I was getting jokes.
I remember the first time I was like Oh I get that.
Im smart enough to get that.
Then it transitioned to me being really upset whenSaturday Nights Main Eventwas on instead ofSNL.
I wantSNLto be on.
We can do so much better than that.
That reflects what we do onThe Detour nothing is winking at the camera.
Theres no catch-line character, really.
Even the catch-line character we have, the Whatcha doing there?
guy from the very first episode, hes still rooted and plays very seriously.
So its that style that I gravitated towards and continue to enjoy.
Do you see there being anything inherently funny about being Canadian, or is that just a misnomer?
Ill point you towards French Canadians and that lowers the bar.
But yeah, theres a very cherry-picked argument that Canadians are funny.
For every funny Canadian, I can name ten funny Americans.
That is basically the population difference.
But if there is one thing about Canadians that is inherent, its the self-deprecation.
Country number two, second place, Silver medalist.
So youre sort of born not knowing youre the best.
I think that breeds a level of self-deprecation which is always funny.
If you’re free to laugh at yourself you’re free to laugh at anything.
Is that how you see it from the Canadian perspective?
That real recognition only comes from Hollywood success?
Canadians would go Yeah, wearegreat!
But some are homegrown.
Theres just not the money to support the business there.
Do you have time in your schedule for more or at your limit?
Its kinda ongoing, which is great.
Ill be very sad when this show goes away because Ive enjoyed all of it.
