But theres nothing more realistic than that.

You never get a happy ending because theres always more show.

I guess, until there isnt.

In spite of all of those previous accomplishments,BoJacksFree Churrofrom its fifth season feels particularly risky and unique.

But Free Churro didnt even initially come from the funeral angle.

According toBoJackcreator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, who wrote the episode, the monologuing solo act came first.

Free Churro exhibits a unique stream-of-consciousness quality that gives the episodes rawness an added edge.

BoJacks eulogy morphs into an uncomfortably pitch-black stand-up routine, complete with rim shots and offstage sound effects.

At one point, BoJack attempts to recall a touching memory that involves his mother.

He even basically equates death to the cancellation of a long-running television show.

I really enjoy the mixture of taking pop-culture ephemera and then taking it really seriously, Bob-Waksberg says.

I like to see what it can represent in a different context.

Of course, the rules that TV establishes are impossible to live up to in real life.

There was discussion if we needed this cold open.

Even though Free Churro never leaves the funeral parlor, Raphael Bob-Waksberg says they considered alternative ideas.

We did have some plan Bs in case it didnt work out.

We talked about the idea of maybe showing flashbacks to the things that BoJack was describing.

This is an episode that proves loss and grief should be messy and imperfect and reflections of ourselves.

As stupid as that sounds, its also shockingly perfect preparation for the great unknown.
