Goddard, who was born in 1979, means in his movie-ish way to evoke an entire era.

Whats missing fromBad Times at the El Royaleis a sense of urgency.

Synthetic isnt always bad, though.

Goddard has affection for his characters, some of whose deaths are genuinely shocking.

And the cast is a motley treat.

When she sings, her voice has its own authenticity.

She parcels herself out in small amounts, but I grew to like her here.

Hemsworth is even higher.

Theres something a little dull about him, but he brings it.

I sawBad Times at the El Royaleat a Brooklyn multiplex with real people, who were reasonably absorbed.

It started pretty slow but then.

They seemed to think theyd gotten their moneys worth.

But sitting on the fence isnt always a bad thing.

You see the sun going down and the eyes in your head see the world spinning round.

True, at the multiplex the fence isnt cheap.

But I was never too bored.

My Coke Zero kept its fizz.

What Im trying to say is that the view from the fence was fine.

So, you know, fresh.
